Scottish Labour candidate Carol Mochan has backed a ban on fracking and challenged her SNP opponent to do the same..
Carol said
"Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale has announced that, under Scottish Labour, no fracking would be allowed in Scotland. The move was welcomed by green campaign groups such as Friends of the Earth Scotland and WWF Scotland.
Despite the SNP campaigning on an anti-fracking platform last May, Nicola Sturgeon has refused to back Labour’s pledge. The SNP are only committed to a temporary freeze on fracking, not an outright ban, and have commissioned major research on how to clean up after fracking.
The SNP Government are also not releasing minutes of meetings with businesses who stand to gain millions from fracking in Scotland. The new powers coming to Scotland mean that we can establish a total ban on fracking in Ayrshire and across all of Scotland– no ifs, buts or maybes.
Does the local SNP candidate agree with me that fracking should be banned or does she agree with the SNP Government in Edinburgh who won’t commit to a ban?
In fact, big businesses say that the SNP aren’t opposed to fracking at all. It looks like the SNP freeze on fracking is to get them past the election – then big business will get the greenlight to drill. The SNP should come clean on fracking – voters deserve straight answers now.”
